History
Once Beltrami County was organized the townships in the area near Bemidji began to organize their own governments. Each township had to petition the county to organize and hold elections. In 1898, a group in Township 148, Range 34W met and drew up a petition. August Becker suggested the name of Liberty. That was the name of the township in Wisconsin, where the Becker brothers had lived.
The group agreed to the name and proceeded to draw up the petition. They appointed A.P. Walker to obtain signatures of the landowners in the area. On July 7, 1898, Mr. Walker took the petition to the County Auditor in Bemidji. The auditor presented the petition to the County Board on July 21, 1898. They accepted the petition and ordered the County Sheriff to post notices in Liberty Township for a meeting on August 9, 1898.
On August 9, 1898 the first meeting was held in Liberty Township to elect officers. In the early 1950’s the town board began looking for land for a town hall. They established a town hall fund so when an opportunity became available – they could buy land and move a building. On May 2, 1952 the Board made a motion to buy 10 acres of land in the center of the township (SW1/4 of SW1/4 of Sec. 15) for a town hall site.
On August 4, 1952 it was approved to send $88.50 to the County Auditor for the 10 acres of land which became the current town hall site. On November 11, 1953 the board sent a bid of $250 for the Buzzle School. On November 11, 1954 Rogers and Pagel were paid $617.20 to move the Buzzle School to its present site.
